the microwave and my nose

I really struggle to keep up with this blogging thing during Christmas and Easter, but I quickly want to tell you about this "aha moment" I had yesterday.

Here it is: You know you need a nose job when you can shut your own nose in an over-the-range microwave ...No seriously...I mean, I would love a nose job, but my lesson learned was maybe it is time to slow down just a tad when you are running through the house like a white tornado on crack so much so that you slam the microwave door shut and forget to move your own head. Yep, it seriously happened. I am talking I had the bloodiest nose EVER...and Chris has never laughed so hard. My nose is still too sore to laugh...Which has got me wondering...Can you feel your nose when you laugh? Or is that just the ultimate sign of someone with a big schnoz?

WOW...my best picture and most insightful post all in one :)

Frustration

Which scenario would cause you the most frustration:

A. Packing up the baby and bags to head out for a morning of grocery shopping and errand running only to realize that you have no debit card, credit card, or cash in your wallet. As you sit there in utter confusion, you begin to vaguely remember seeing your kids playing with your purse while your were talking to your mom on the phone and cooking dinner last night.

B. Taking 30min to diligently write a grocery list only to get to the Super Target parking lot and realize you forgot the list at home.

C. Feeling like you struck gold because you found 2 checks on your husband's desk that you cashed so you could do your grocery shopping and errand running, only to get to the check out lane in Super Target and realize just as the cashier is saying, "Your total is $112.13 " that you left your coveted cash in the car. You must now ask the cashier to wait for you while you grab the baby and run back to the car for the cash. Did I mention there are 3 people behind you in the line?

D. Getting into your car after your money fiasco at Super Target and realizing you are already 15 minutes late to pick your kids up from preschool.

OR

E. Being the spouse of the person who all this happened to in one morning and receiving the "please go get the boys and let me tell you about my morning while your on your way" phone call.

Just wondering if Chris or I had a more frustrating morning? :)

The humorous part is that I am leading a book study this week on being intentional about pursuing peace. Um, I definitely blew it this morning. I have this crazy fear of wasting time and become frantic very quickly when I sense time is going down the drain. Nothing distracts you more from pursuing peace than going into "frantic mode". At least I now have a great "go-to" illustration of what not to do for our study. :)

Fashionista Friend

OK, in follow-up to my shopping finds post, I thought I would send you to my friend's blog. she is a true fashion expert, and she has posted some great fall fashions for those of us who need a little assistance. Check it out, and I swear, if it is on her blog, it's in style (sorry, Paige, but she does have skinny jeans on there!)

I really think she must look at me all the time and think, "Good try, Holly, but not quite." :) Keep posting tips, Heather....I'm a good pupil...I'll get better.

Necessities vs. Bonuses Part I

Alright, here’s the deal: God has had me laughing at myself a lot lately. It seems that as seasons change, so do I and so do my so called “needs”. All these things that I once thought were definite necessities in my life are now just bonuses. Things that I just knew I could not live without—I could give or take now.

Here are just a few examples of my once daily necessities turned bonuses:

1. 8 hours of consecutive sleep per night. (You can live off 4-5 hours of interrupted sleep if you have too!)

2. Sitting during a meal. (Totally overrated—and now I just think of how I'm burning all those calories just as soon as they come enter my mouth. )

3. Showering/Bathing/Using the bathroom alone. (The master bathroom has become our family room—we converse, eat, shower, plan for the day, play ball, you name it—if it is usually done in the family room by normal people, we do it in the master bathroom. Between helping everyone get ready and potty training—we seem to live in there. It’s great though—just fix the kids breakfast and put them in the empty bathtub to eat, and then any mess they make, you just wash down the drain. No need to get frustrated about spilled juice or crumbs everywhere. When they are done eating, just take their clothes off and wash the kids up. Really, it is an ingenious idea if you ask me. And besides, if you are lucky enough to have a garden tub, and you can convince the kids that it is their very own swimming pool. My kids think they have the coolest parents, because we let them eat in “their pool” and we let them “swim” in it as long as they like --This one I do when I am waiting in Chris to get home from work and I feel like the boys are going stir crazy—just throw them in the master “pool” for about an hour. They love it!)

4. Leisure reading. (Please, don’t embarrass me by asking me anything about pop culture, or telling me that my shawl has transferred from the what’s hot to what’s not list about 3 years ago.)

5. Hot coffee. (Coffee -and lots of it!- is still a necessity, but I am beginning to develop a liking for lukewarm/border line cold coffee. Here’s the cool thing: You can start with a hot cup, and then when it hits that borderline cold state, just throw ice in it and call it a frappuccino. It works, I promise.)

6. Shaving my legs. (OK, once a week is still a necessity, but daily—just a bonus :).

7. Sunglasses. (If I can ever find those things in my diaper bag while I am driving and they are in one piece when I finally unearth them--that is a huge bonus. It never happens though. Max gets so frustrated when he can’t find his (he owns at least 5 pairs), and I just laugh because I know the day is soon coming when he too will consider it just a bonus to have them on hand. Jack (the 2nd child—who does not own a single pair-- just puts a book over his head if the sun is in his eyes while we're driving. Oh, how things change from that first child to the 2nd!)

8. A hot meal at least once a day. (String cheese, yogurt, and fruit snacks really can go a long way :).

I could list many more, but I want you to know that I once believed it was "my right" to have these things (I know, I was and still can be incredibly selfish). Now that I have realized that these once I couldn’t live without things are just bonuses, I really have become a much more pleasant person. If I get them, great. If I don’t—oh well. The day will soon come when I can be well rested, alone in my bathroom, taking a bath while reading an In Style magazine, shaving my legs, sipping on hot coffee, and wearing my non- broken sunglasses if I want to. And you know what I will be sitting there thinking about? The days when we used to eat breakfast and play baseball in the bathroom with the kids :).

Somebody, please just remind me I wrote that the next time you see me picking the kids up from school with a purple scrunchy in my hair, digging through their lunchboxes for a leftover PB&J to eat on the way to the car!

What about you? What are some everyday things that you once thought you could not live without, that now you consider just a bonus?

TAGGED

I have been tagged by my friend, Faith, to answer a few random things about myself:

1. What was I doing 10 years ago?

Oh, crap-- this question just reminded me that it has been 10 years since I graduated from high school!! The problem is that I was the class president and planning a reunion was my responsibility!!! Yikes!! "OK-- Don't panic, Holly, you can do this."

To all my dear fellow high school friends that read this: please forward this to anyone in our class that you keep in touch with:

Dear BBCS Class of 1998 Graduates (all 26 of you!!!):

Wow-- I feel much better already. I just needed a minute to think.

2. My Favorite Snacks

Organic baby carrots and celery with a dash of pure rock salt and a glass green tea

3. Five things on my to-do list today

  • Iron Chris' boxers
  • Finish baking my famous made from scratch pound cake for my small group
  • Finish knitting Baby Annie's hospital blanket
  • Attend weekly homeowner's association meeting
  • Take Max and Jack to the Miami Symphony Orchestra concert

4.Things I would do if I were a billionaire

Equip everyone I know to live a more "GREEN" lifestyle.

5. Five jobs that I've had

  1. Hair Colorist
  2. Golf Caddy
  3. Maid
  4. Cook
  5. Algebra Tutor

Oh wait, do you think that question meant previous jobs? I was just thinking about what I do NOW. I'll tell you what-- Chris can be a handful.

6. Five places (OR rooms) in which I've lived

  • In a room with my sister, Kristi, that was decked out with the Charlotte hornets posters
  • In a room with my sister, Kristi, that was pink with ballet slippers all over it (neither one of us ever danced!!)
  • In a room with my sister, Kristi, that was decorated with the cartoon duck tales (sad to say, we were in high school at the time!)
  • In a room with Chris that is decorated with Star Trek paraphernalia

***I have lived with some people who are in serious identity crisis'

7.Five random things people wouldn't know about me:

  1. I am always serious
  2. I just eat and eat and eat and can't gain a pound to save my life
  3. I was always a huge BLOSSOM fan (remember that show?). I loved her so much, I even got a nose job to resemble hers.
  4. I have a really hard time opening up to people
  5. I stress about what to write on this blog
8. Five Cd's that I'd have to take on a desert island

A desert island? It wouldn't matter what Cd's I brought, because I would just use them to reflect the sun so someone would rescue me and take me to the nearest hotel where I could shower and relax.

9. People I tag are....

Everyone I know has already been tagged!!

Hope you laugh reading this as much as I did writing it. By the way, if you believe any of this, you are as gullible as my friend, Faith :) !!!
